ANN HSU EMERGES AS “CONSENSUS CANDIDATE” FOR SF BOARD OF EDUCATION

Broad Support Growing for Outspoken Parent and Family Advocate

August 20, 2024, SAN FRANCISCO—Ann Hsu is rapidly gaining recognition as the "consensus candidate" for the San Francisco Board of Education in the upcoming November 2024 election. Influential leaders from across the political spectrum, including former Green Party Vice Presidential Candidate Matt Gonzalez, former California State Senator and retired Superior Court Judge Quentin Kopp, former five term US congressman from California and former California Director of Finance Tom Campbell, and Forward Party founder and former Democratic Party Presidential Candidate Andrew Yang, have enthusiastically endorsed Hsu's campaign.

“Ann Hsu is the candidate who will represent all families in the SFUSD and work tirelessly to ensure that students from all backgrounds receive the support and resources needed to advance academically, socially and emotionally," stated campaign spokesperson Quincy Yu. "It is no surprise that such a wide range of support is pouring in."

In announcing his endorsement, Matt Gonzalez, former San Francisco Board of Supervisors President, said, “Ann Hsu is a principled, transparent leader with the skills and experience necessary to tackle the serious challenges facing the SFUSD.” Hsu, an independent good governance candidate, is focused on addressing the issues affecting all families and students in San Francisco.

Former California State Senator and retired California Superior Court Judge Quentin Kopp, currently the head of the San Francisco Taxpayers Association, noted, “SFUSD is facing a $421 million structural deficit and is considering the closure of poorly attended and inefficiently run schools. Given Ann Hsu's deep understanding of the district's finances, and her experience as the Chair of the Citizens Bond Oversight Committee, I have no doubt she is the most qualified candidate to lead the SFUSD at this critical time.

Former 5-term US congressman from California, former California State Senator and former California Director of finance Tom Campbell said: “Ann Hsu is a tremendously qualified educator, deeply committed to offering every San Francisco child the best chance for a quality education. She is not a partisan, following the best path to help students learn despite pressure from organized groups pushing their own agenda. I enthusiastically endorse her for the San Francisco Board of Education.

“Ann Hsu knows how to make students and schools thrive with limited resources,” added Yu. “As the principal of a non-profit school in Potrero Hill, Hsu led a school that turned student performance around quickly, closing the achievement gap for students who were 2-3 grade levels behind in math. Just one year later, those students met or exceeded grade level proficiency. Hsu wants to bring these insights to public schools to benefit all students.”

Andrew Yang, the 2020 Democratic Party Presidential Candidate and founder of the Forward Party, endorsed Hsu, stating, “Ann is the principled voice advocating for all students and families.”
