ANN HSU CALLS ON ALL BOARD OF EDUCATION CANDIDATES TO JOIN HER IN SIGNING A PLEDGE TO TAKE POLITICS OUT OF OUR SCHOOLS!

August 13, 2024, SAN FRANCISCO — Board of Education candidate Ann Hsu pledges that she will put San Francisco students and families first, will serve out her term if elected and will not run for higher office after leaving the Board of Education for five years.

50 years ago, SFUSD served more than 90,000 students. Today, the District serves less than 50,000 students. Enrollment has been declining while budgets have been increasing, and the number of schools has grown to over 120.  SFUSD has not been adjusting its budget and facilities to its decreasing student population and has been mismanaging funds for years. The Board of Education has allowed this to happen while it pursued ideological political goals. The structural deficit has been acknowledged and discussed for years, but the Board of Education has not had the political will to address the issue.

The District and the Board of Education are now at the end of the road, and the State and the City cannot bail it out as they have in previous years because they too are in a fiscal deficit crisis. Three (3) years ago the State sent fiscal experts to SFUSD, and they warned the District to stop “kicking the can down the road” to no avail. As of March 2024, these fiscal experts have been elevated to fiscal advisers with the power to veto any decision made by the Board of Education related to finances and force the District to take steps.

The Board of Education is facing and will continue to face difficult decisions related to the fiscal crisis and closing of schools. Now more than ever, politics cannot be a factor in decisions that must be made to balance fiscal challenges with the needs of students and parents.

“I call on all BOE candidates to join me and sign the attached pledge to put San Francisco students and families first, and not run for higher office after leaving the Board of Education for five years!”  Ann Hsu
