Good morning, Everyone, my name is Ann Hsu.

  • You may know me as a Recall School Board leader 3 years ago.

  • You may know me as a School Board Member 2 years ago.

  • You may know me as the founder of an American and Chinese bicultural school 1 year ago

  • Today, I am announcing that I am running, once again, for the Board of Education this November.

Let me tell you why.

First, I’m running to keep politics OUT of our schools!

  • Many school board members in the past have used their seats as stepping stones for higher political office.

  • They have made promises and decisions that were not in the best interest of students and families but for their own political careers.

  • Then they go on to run for city supervisor, state assemblyman, state senator, US Congressman, US Senator and the likes, leaving students and families to suffer the consequences of their bad decisions.

  • I promise that I will not run for any of those offices and only serve the students of San Francisco on the School Board.

  • I challenge every other school board candidate to do the same!

Second, I’m running to TELL THE TRUTH about what needs to be done to fix our schools fiscally, including closing schools.

  • 50 years ago, SFUSD served more than 90k students

  • Today, we serve less than 50k students

  • While enrollment declined, budgets ballooned.

  • Decades of mismanagement has brought us to today when we are forced to close schools.

Third, I am the ONLY FORMER COMMISSIONER and CURRENT EDUCATOR who, on Day One, can address our fiscal crisis that years of mismanagement has put us in.

  • I need no training as a school board member

  • I have first hand experience from running my own school serving low-income, monolingual immigrant families and their children.

  • I have found innovative and successful practices that brought students from more than 2 grade levels behind to on and beyond grade level in ONE academic year.

  • I want to bring that knowledge and experience to the school board to benefit ALL THE STUDENTS of SFUSD.

我是三年前罷免教委的領導人。

我是兩年前被市長任命的教育委員。

我是一年前創辦了一所美中雙文化學校的創始人。

今天，我正式宣布參選今年 11 月份的教育委員會。

我為什麼再次參選教委呢？

首先，我要阻止教委們再次玩政治游戲，我要讓政治遠離我們的學校！

  • 在過去的很多年裡，許多人都把教委這個職位當作職業政治道路的墊腳石

  • 他們做出的承諾和決定並不是為了學生和家庭的利益，而是為了他們自己的政治生涯

  • 當上教委後他們就繼續競選市參事、州議員、國會議員等，讓學生家長們承擔他們所做的錯誤決定的後果

  • 我保證不會競選任何其他職位，只會在教育委員會為舊金山的學生服務

我挑戰其他所有教委候選人也這樣承諾！

第二，我參選是為了說出真相給舊金山的市民們聽，告訴大家我們為什麼需要修復我們學區財政問題，包括關閉學校。

  • 50 年前，舊金山聯合學區有 9 萬多名學生

  • 今天，我們僅有不到 5 萬名學生

  • 在學生人數下降的同時，財政預算不斷地膨脹

  • 幾十年的浪費讓我們今天被迫關閉學校

第三，我是唯一一位前任教委和現任教育工作者，在上任第一天就能幫助解決多年管理不善給我們帶來的財政危機

  • 我不需要任何做教委的培訓

  • 我有教育學生的第一手經驗；我的學校繼續為低收入和移民家庭的子女提供服務

  • 我們找到了創新且成功的教育方法，讓落後年級水平兩年以上的學生在一個學年內追趕上年級水平

  • 我希望將這些知識和經驗帶給舊金山公立學區，讓所有的學生都受益
