Politics have trumped education for too long at SFUSD!  This is why I am running for the school board on November 5, 2024!

Wondered how SFUSD found itself in its current state of fiscal crisis!  Watch my video.

Hello,

I am Ann Hsu, a school principal and teacher and mom to 2 public school students. Thank you for visiting my campaign website and taking the time to learn about me and why I am running for the San Francisco School Board.

As an immigrant to this country 45 years ago, I am grateful for the American public education system for giving me and my family the opportunity to pursue our American dreams. After 25+ years of rewarding entrepreneurial experiences in the private sector, my only professional goal at this stage of my life is to help ensure that ALL students of San Francisco can have access to quality and affordable education!

I have been deeply involved in San Francisco public schools in recent years:

  • 3 years ago, I helped lead the successful Recall School Board campaign when we removed 3 school board members who were playing politics rather than focusing on our children’s education

  • 2 years ago, I served on the School Board and restored merit based admissions back to Lowell High School, stopped the destruction of the George Washington murals, and saved JROTC by getting funding from the US Army

  • 1 year ago, I founded a nonprofit school serving working and immigrant families of San Francisco

Today, I’m running for the Board of Education because:

1) SFUSD is in a fiscal crisis, and I have the profesional and personal experience to serve our students from Day One.

  • I served as a Commissioner on the School Board.

  • I served as Chair of the SFUSD Independent Citizens’ Bond Oversight Committee (CBOC) and the President of Galileo High School’s PTSA before serving on the School Board.

  • I have first hand experience in educating students from running my own nonprofit K-8 school serving students from working and immigrant families, many of whom are low-income, monolingual and single parent households.

  • Our school has successfully brought students from more than 2 years behind grade level academically to on and above grade level in ONE academic year.

  • I want to bring that knowledge and experience to SFUSD so that ALL STUDENTS CAN BENEFIT.

2) I want to TELL THE TRUTH about what needs to be done to fix our schools fiscally, including closing schools.

  • 50 years ago, SFUSD served more than 90,000 students.

  • Today, we serve less than 50,000 students.

  • While enrollment declined, budgets ballooned.

  • Decades of mismanagement and wasteful spending have brought us to today when we are forced to close schools.

3) I’m running to keep politics OUT of our schools, again!

  • Decades of focusing on politics instead of education have brought down our public schools! The successfull Recall School Board campaign 3 years ago signaled that we had enough! We cannot go back to politics as usual in our public schools!

  • I promise that I will not use the School Board as stepping stone for higher political office and only serve the students of San Francisco on the School Board. I challenge every other school board candidate to do the same!

I am running for the SF School Board in November 2024. I appreciate your interest and hope you will support me by donating to my campaign and/or volunteering to help me win the election.

Sincerely,

Ann Hsu
